A Journey Through 28 Landscapes

A photo and description of each of the 28 paintings from February 2023's World Landscape Challenge.

This series grew out of an absurd challenge I gave myself in 2023. At the time, I had no idea the way it would feel like a journey straight across the earth, and how central the theme of strength would be.

What began as a personal challenge slowly turned into a chance to wander the world, moving from one landscape to the next, each place offering a different perspective on beauty and strength.

On a whim, I decided that 28 paintings in 28 days would be the perfect challenge*. While I completed all 28, it took me closer to 40 days. I’m pleased with this result, since the goal was to paint a ton.

Maybe next time I’ll make up a challenge that doesn’t require 1+ paintings a day?

Even so, I ended up with beauties like Arches National Park, the “Sleeping Beauty Castle”, and the Kenyan Tea Fields… goodness, every time I see that one, I wish I could teleport right there. Painting it felt like stepping into the landscape for a moment and simply staying there awhile.

And St. Basil’s Cathedral in Russia? Those “onion domes” are stunning. It’s like a fairytale.

The landscapes appear in the order I painted them, so you can take the same journey I did. They touch almost every continent, and each one means something different to me. Some are sweeping views, some are quiet spaces, and some feel almost like little pauses in the middle of a much larger world.

I’m curious how they’ll land for you, as you meander through them all, and which feelings and ideas they’ll bring up for you.

When you find a painting that draws you in, or one that you want to know more about, click the ‘read the story’ link. It could be a cliffside, a waterfall, a desert, a city, or one of the others.

Maybe it’ll be the painting of that one place on your Bucket List. Or one that exudes the calm you long to feel more often. Or the one reminding you of a special trip.

As you wander the world in this post, from beginning to end, scrolling to each painting/destination, notice which ones you pause on, and why. Click into one or two stories if you become curious about them. Pay attention to which ones you’re still thinking about tomorrow or next week.

And then let me know which are your favorite 3! I love to know which pieces resonate with different people.

Bolivian Salt Flat 3/28

You are human. You have a knack for creating-- whether that’s art, meals, a home environment, spreadsheets, or something else.

And as a human creative, you use whatever resources you have before you. Just like the Bolivians near the salt flats, who used excess salt to create statues and figures.

Nothing can stand between you and your vision, though many things may try. Keep pursuing your vision, keep making beauty out of what’s around you. And keep a Bolivian Salt Llama nearby for inspiration.
